Listen to Dr. Rogers Preaching
Dr. Avery Rogers was
born in 1901 in Lamar County, Texas. As a young man he was "born again" under
the ministry of Mordecai Ham and surrendered to preach shortly thereafter.
Completing his
education at Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he
commenced a preaching ministry which lasted for fifty-six years. He served as
undershepherd for forty-five years at various churches in Texas with twenty-five
years invested in ministry in Victoria, Texas in four different Baptist
churches. Two of these pastorates involved the establishment of churches from
the beginning.
Having served on
the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and as Chairman
of Evangelism for District IV for several years, he concluded his ministry by
itinerating for the last fifteen years. His ministry took him into twenty-one
states and various foreign countries, preaching in both Convention and
Independent Baptist churches, in conferences, in camps, and in meetings for
revival. Valuable to the content of his ministry was Brother Rogers' time spent
in the Holy Land studying the customs and life-styles of the people there.
Besides his
pastoral and itinerate ministry of evangelism, he taught for three years in the
Texas College of Theology. Then too, he exercised an extensive counseling
ministry throughout, particularly with fellow preachers of the Word of God.
On July 24, 1981,
the Lord called him to still further service – but now in glory. He was
survived by his wife Ollie (deceased 1983), his children Marian Rogers Nichols
and Don Reaves Rogers, five grandchildren, and eventually six
great-grandchildren (and counting). His grandson,
Shawn Nichols, serves as Pastor of Bayou Drive Baptist Church in Alvin,
Texas.
